Background of the Study
Digital platforms have given rise to unprecedented linguistic creativity, notably in the area of morphological innovation. In Nigeria, Instagram captions serve as a space where users manipulate word forms to convey humor, identity, and cultural references. This study explores how morphological processes such as compounding, blending, and re-spelling are deployed in Instagram captions to create novel expressions that resonate with the youth and urban communities (Chukwu, 2023). The fusion of local languages with English, along with the influence of visual context, encourages playful and innovative language use. Instagram, with its emphasis on aesthetics and brevity, propels users to condense complex ideas into succinct, morphologically inventive captions. Such practices not only reflect contemporary cultural dynamics but also challenge conventional linguistic norms by fostering new forms and meanings. The creative adaptations observed in Instagram captions illustrate the transformative potential of digital media on language evolution in Nigeria. This study aims to document these morphological innovations, analyze their linguistic structure, and discuss their broader sociocultural implications, thereby contributing to our understanding of digital language change (Oluwatoyin, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although morphological innovation is evident in Nigerian Instagram captions, there is limited empirical research on the systematic processes underlying these changes. Traditional linguistic studies have not adequately addressed how digital media fosters novel word formations or the sociocultural factors driving these innovations. The lack of focused research creates challenges for understanding the dynamics of language change in the digital age and hinders the development of theoretical models that account for digital linguistic creativity (Okeke, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document morphological innovations in Nigerian Instagram captions.

  • To analyze the linguistic structures of these innovations.

  • To evaluate the cultural and social drivers behind digital morphological change.

Research Questions

  • What morphological innovations are common in Nigerian Instagram captions?

  • How are these innovations structured linguistically?

  • What cultural factors contribute to morphological innovation in digital contexts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the creative processes behind digital morphological innovation on Instagram. The findings will offer insights into contemporary language evolution and digital communication trends, informing both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in linguistics and social media studies (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing Instagram captions from Nigerian users and does not consider other social media platforms or offline linguistic phenomena.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphological Innovation: The creative manipulation of word forms and structures.

  • Instagram Captions: Textual descriptions accompanying images on Instagram.

  • Digital Linguistic Creativity: The inventive use of language driven by digital media.
